Fashion Choices That Hide Problem Areas

So you’ve got your dad’s eyes, grandma’s freckles, Aunt Suzie’s infectious laugh, and your mom’s thighs. And though you may never want to trade in your mom, you may sometimes want to trade in your thighs. But so what? Perfection is overrated and that’s what baggy clothes were made for. So things being as they are, let’s talk about the best fashion choices for hiding those problem areas.

Woman with white top

Create Curves On Top
You can draw attention away from your curves by wearing something that adds visual dimension to your shoulder and bust area. It will play up the top of your body while drawing attention away from your hips and thighs. Look for:

  • Horizontal necklines, like boat necks or straight necks. Wrap necklines may slim your torso, but focus attention on your bust.
  • Light colors, like light pink or white.
  • Bright colors, like electric blues, reds, and oranges.Eye-catching details like polka dots, stripes, sequins, or large collars.
  • Kimono or bell sleeves.
  • A good push up bra or bust enhancing neckline, like a bustier.
  • Scarves. Need we say more?

Downplay Curves
If you want to minimize hips, butt, and thighs, try the following:

  • Dark colors, especially dark wash jeans or dress pants.
  • Vertical details like stitches, pleats, and decorative zippers.
  • Tops that end just below the hip bone. (Avoid lengths across the across your thighs and hip length tops.)
  • Thigh and hip hugging shapewear.
  • Heels.

shift dress

Minimize Middle
If weight gain around the midsection is problematic, you probably want to choose something that fits loosely around the middle and more tightly elsewhere. Your best choices include:

  • Slim cut pants, to show off slim legs.
  • Shift dresses: These will look very flattering, especially with high heels.
  • Tunics, which glide over the middle, emphasizing other body parts.
  • Empire waist tops.

You want to avoid wearing anything that draws too much attention to the middle, such as belts, waist cinching tops, and high-rise pants.

Pencil skirt

Hourglass
If you’ve got that hourglass body, proportions are no problem, but some clothes may make your curves look more like angles. You need to find clothes that move with your body naturally. Stay away from shapeless styles, like cardigans, tunics, and baby doll dresses. To make the most of your curves, look for:

  • Pencil skirts, great for cinching the waist and skimming the hips.
  • V-Neck shirts: A tight fitting top will flatter without exaggerating.
  • High waisted pants draw attention to a slim waist.
  • Wrap dress: The diagonal cut will hit all the right places.

Bottom Slimming Pants
To create a lean line on your lower body, the best pants are flare legs, straight and skinny, boot cuts, and pants with simple waistbands.

Skirts and Dresses with Width and Volume
It may seem counterintuitive, but skirts that are wider at the bottom usually balance out wider hips. Steer away from too-full skirts in favor of something with an a-line shape. Flared skirts and full circle skirts will also flatter, as will maxi and gypsy skirts.

statement necklace

Statement Jewelry
Eye-catching earrings and necklaces draw attention upward. Examples include gemstones, metal discs, and chandelier and feather earrings.

Short Jackets
Jackets that hit a few inches above the hipline will help to make your legs look thinner and longer. Hip length jackets can also work, as long as you wear a suitable bottom, such as a dark colored A-line skirt or pair of dress pants. Short leather jackets are a good choice, as are cropped denims.

Never underestimate the power of good underwear! It can hide a multitude of sins!

Let us know what you wear to make your problem areas less problematic. We want to know!

Spring and Summer Colors For Lips, Hair, and Nails

When makeup first became widely available in the twenties, the color palette was limited. Powders were cream and ivory, lips were almost invariably some shade of red, and smoky eyes were de rigeur. Woe to those who couldn’t carry it off. True summers had to choose from the same palettes as dark autumns, bright winters were confined to the same choices as light springs, and soft autumns were offered the same options as soft summers. Oh, how times have changed. Nowadays, it seems as if we can’t walk into Sephora without emerging an hour later finally having determined that the Plum Attraction was more flattering than the #61 Wine.

Woman with red lipstick

If you’re having trouble navigating through the color options, here are a few pointers to set you in the right direction. Check out the colors trending for spring and summer 2017 for lips, hair, and nails.

Lipstick
Vivid lips were on display on the 2017 spring runways. Textures ranged from the glittery, (Fendi) to the matte, (Giambattista Valli, and Jason Wu), and of course Carolina Herrera and Chanel brought the high gloss. Jason Wu make up artists created a sporty fluorescent look by layering a cherry with a matte orange. Valentino and Cushnie et Ochs chose semi matte shades ranging from electric pink to ruby. And, if your partial to the ultra shine, take a cue form the Kenzo and Simone Rocha runway with some eye catching shine. If your looking for some hot colors for your lips this season, look for:

  • Poppy Pink or Fuschia – Nothing says spring like a fushia lip.
  • Deep Berry – If you’re aiming to bring some drama into the spring, you can’t go wrong with a deep berry.
  • Bright Purple – Try some violet and twilight hues to recall the warm summer sunset.
  • Hot Red – There is always a call for a good strong red. Use it to spice up your 2017 spring summer pout.

Hair Color

Bronze ombre

Bronze Ombre
If you have dark hair and not much time to spend on upkeep, celebrity colorist David Adams advises going two or three complementary shades lighter. He describes this look as an ombre 2.0 “blended through the middle and slightly lighter ones on the ends and around the face, which keeps color away from new growth to minimize maintenance.”

Warm Honey
Faithful brunettes who want to lighten up a touch might consider adding some natural amber to honey highlights to soften their natural color.

Baby Blonde
Already convinced that blondes have more fun? Think about going blonder. Stylist Sharon Dorram recommends lightening up with “strategically placed baby blond highlights around the face and crown.”

Creamy Blonde
If you don’t mind frequent trips to the colorist, a creamy platinum may be for you. Check out the look on Jennifer Lawrence for celebrity inspo.

Nail Polish

yellow nail polish

Sunflower Yellow
You’ll be seeing a lot of sunflower hello on nails this season. Check out versions form Essie, OPI and Christian Louboutin.

Valentine Pink
Taking break from red? Bright pink is a great alternative. Nails Inc. and Dior are both offering up takes on vibrant pink. FYI: Valentine pink was also spotted popping up the runways of Moshino, Fendi, and Valentino.

Tropical Green
Nothing says spring quite like green. Straight from the D and G runways, the earth friendly shade is currently available from both Essie and OPI.

Salmon Pink
For a more neutral approach to pink, try a salmon for the office and the beach.

Hope this clears things up! What colors are you sporting for spring and summer 2017? Let us know! We want your fabulous input!

Caffeine’s Effects On Your Skin

Judging from the lines at Starbucks, people sure like the effects of coffee. It seems that coffee companies cannot find enough ways of incorporating the bean into new drinks. Just when you think you finally figured out the difference between a mocha chino and macchiato, a new drink appears with lines of people ready to dole out their hard-earned cash for the latest blast of caffeine infused sweetness. And while these consumers may be giving themselves an extra pat on the back for the not so recent evidence of coffee’s antioxidant properties, they may be less enamored to hear of how the brew actually affects the skin.

Woman drinking coffee

Tannins
Tannin is a chemical present in coffee and tea. If the knowledge that tannin is used in tanneries to process leather isn’t enough to convince you that it’s not something you want in your coffee, consider its effects on your skin. Tannins prevent the pores of cells from receiving nutrients. Other things that make tannin such a great leather treatment, and a such a lousy skin treatment, are its hydration removal properties, which can make skin brittle over time.

Liver Spots
Liver spots are a common skin problem for older people. The liver functions as a filter to purify your blood, allowing cells to receive essential nutrients and oxygen. Over the long term, coffee can block the liver with toxins, preventing it from doing its job. The impurities in the blood result in high levels of liver congestion and toxicity which can result in the appearance of the dreaded liver spot, according to Chet Day’s Health and Beyond Online.

Dehydration
Not only does the tannin contribute to skin dehydration, the caffeine in the coffee acts like a diuretic in high amounts, furthering the dehydrating effects. Diuretics cause increased urination which dries out your skin and your body. Although a few cups of Joe a day may not dry you out too badly, try to keep your intake to under 4 cups to avoid problems.

Woman drinking coffee indoors

Acne
Ok, so the word is still out on the acne-caffeine connection, but it seems to be the opinion of most experts that, while caffeine may not cause acne, it could exacerbate an already existing condition, according to AbsoluteAcneInfo.com. The toxic effects of coffee on the liver may also contribute to acne because the caffeine can block the liver from purifying blood, which may taint skin cells.

Topical Use Of Caffeine
Why, you may be wondering, if coffee is so bad for the skin, is it a common ingredient in skin care products? Well, it turns out that the antioxidant properties in caffeine make it an effective anti-ager and its ability to constrict small blood vessels and reduce inflammation can help minimize sagging skin and dark circles under the eyes. Caffeine’s anti- inflammatory qualities often aid in reducing the appearance of cellulite and its dehydrating abilities help to draw excess fluids from fat cells.

So the upshot? When it comes to caffeine and your skin, put it on you, not in you. Let us know what you think? Is the caffeine withdrawal worth the potential skin benefits?
