Fall for Autumn Fashion

vine vera banner presents Fall for Autumn Fashion

“Women must be colorful inside and out.” This is what designer Gudrun Sjoden replied when asked why she chose to use such a brilliant array of colors in her latest fashion line.

It was all about comfort, style, and anything go at this fashion show. Dresses and skirts were worn layered over color coordinated pants. Knee high stocking and socks offered alternatives to the constraints of pantyhose, and there were no such things as unmatching colors or bad print combinations. No season was out of season. Loose fitting clothes freed the body and graphic designs freed the mind. It was a utopia of fashion and an ideal vision of the future. Here’s a look at the Gudrun Sjoden fashion show from the inside.

The Setting
The stage is set at the Swedish Residence on Park Avenue at 64th Street. The temperature, a scorching 92 degrees, and its still morning. The occasion, the unveiling of designer Gudrun Sjoden’s summer ’17 collection. The runway, a multicolored striped rug in the hotel lobby. The clothes, eclectic cutting edge, bohemian. The message: freedom.

The Designer
Gudrun Sjoden has been creating a clothing line for women for over 40 years. But not just any woman. No supermodels grace this runway. Sjoden chooses women who represent the message of her clothing line. Water activist and former Miss Africa Georgie Biel and model turned actress Angel Pai model the brightly colored hand painted designs and eco-friendly fabrics that are the hallmarks of Sjoden’s collection.

The Look
Patterns were in abundance in this display. Sjoden employs a technique called Ikat weave and indigo dying, in addition to her geometrical zigzags, and circles. There was no shortage of rich fabrics and embroidery and the designer’s preference for roses and stripes was clear. However, despite the profusion of show-stopping fashion, most stunning, perhaps, is the fact that 93% of Gudrun’s garments are made from sustainable materials. Says she, “This year, we are celebrating 25 years of organic cotton production in Greece.”

The Influence
Where does Sjoden’s inspiration come from? “While designing this collection, we visited India to explore the traditional crafts techniques for dying, using indigo and rose madder red. This craft combined with an earlier trip to Lisbon with its tiled walls, went on to inspire the autumn collection.” the designer revealed.

The Lowdown
S Joden’s first store opened in Stockholm, Sweden in 1976. Her concept of designing colorful comfortable clothes with Nordic influences in natural materials continue to dominate her collection. Her clothes are available through her catalog and website in markets including Germany, the US, and the UK.

What do you think of the message behind Sjoden’s collection? Let us know! We love to hear from you.

Midi Skirt Looks

Midi skirt

The latest trend to swing across the fashion boards is the midi skirt. There are many different styles and versions of midi skirts to choose from but whichever you prefer you will find it a welcome and elegant addition to your spring/summer wardrobe. The skirt is a complimentary look for all women as the silhouette created by wearing this piece is both elegant and stylish.

Midi skirts come in so many different guises, making it versatile and easy to wear no matter what your own personal style is. There is the pencil midi, the gathered full skirt midi and the wrap midi to name but a few. You may choose to wear it with a top tucked in and a large waist-cinching belt, or perhaps funk it up with a graphic tee or even you could wear it over a longer dress to give a completely original twist to the tale. Whichever you choose, you need to follow a few simple guidelines in order to achieve optimum results from your skirt!

It’s All About the Shoes
A statement shoe is a must have when wearing a midi; your shoes are in full view so need to be show (or shoe!) stoppers. If your midi is a one-color style then ramp up the shoes even more by choosing a pattern wedge or a bright colored high-heeled sandal. Another idea is to wear socks and cute pumps to turn heads in a girlie, fifties-style flirty way.

Solid Color Midi
A solid color midi skirt will give you a more elegant look and so are more appropriate for events like weddings or formal garden parties this summer season. You can pair the skirt with a silk blouse or top for a beautifully understated look full of effortless style. This is a great alternative to wearing a dress and opting for separates will make you stand out from the crowd as a style maven! Another outfit suggestion is to pair your midi skirt with a matching top and create a coordinated effect. A lot of designers and stores will have matching sets like this as the overall look is that of a one-piece, but on closer inspection admirers will decipher that you are, in fact, a savvy dresser with an eye for this season’s hottest trend.

Splits and Stripes
There are two other things to note when picking your midi skirt. First, a side split is a good thing. Because this design of skirt cuts your legs out of view just below the knee, making you look shorter, having a split will give the illusion of longer legs and counteract this issue. Second, avoid horizontal stripes as they widen the body, vertical stripes will have the opposite effect and will add inches to your profile.

The midi skirt may have a reputation of being a summery, feminine piece but it is possible to give it a totally hard edge by wearing it with boots and adding some leather accessories etc. Also, wear more dramatic makeup and pair the skirt with a darker colored top and the look becomes anything but girly! A midi skirt is a must-have this season and there is a style and cut available for every size and shape. It is a trend to have fun with and find your own fashion niche. Plus these skirts are timeless so invest wisely and you will have a go-to look for years to come.

Skirt and Sweater Combos for Fall

The skirt and sweater combo is a great multi-tasking outfit choice for a variety of seasons. Really the only time it won’t work, depending on your area and climate, is during the heat of the summer, when a sweater would be a bit much. For spring and fall, a lighter sweater and bare legs under the skirt strike a perfect balance for keeping cool without freezing over, and for the bitter cold of the winter months (and possibly the tail-end of autumn, again depending on your home area’s climate), a thicker sweater—or a thick shirt under a thick sweater if necessary—with tights or thick, warm leggings under your skirt can keep you both warm and fashionable.

And the best part is that the sweater and skirt combo has so, so many possible pairings to keep it fresh and fun, so you can reuse the same basic combo again and again without it getting old. And with fall right around the corner, Vine Vera wanted to help you get started thinking about your options with a few inspirational skirt and sweater ideas of our own.

Cowl-Neck and Circle Skirt
This might sound like an odd combo at first, but once you’ve got it on, you’re bound to love it. There are a few different ways to approach this one, but it looks best with a lot of texture. Choose a skirt that stops somewhere above the knee, which creates an interesting visual contrast between the shorter skirt and a big, billowy cowl neck sweater. For colder temps pair with over-the-knee boots to keep warm and stay on trend or if its still warm, we recommend a pair of cute t-strap heels or little booties.

Cropped Sweater, Button-Up and Fluted Skirt
Have some fun with layering on a a more mild autumn day when you can wear a skirt without leggings, and get a knee-length or longer fluted skirt and cropped sweater in matching colors, with a button-up shirt in a complimentary color (a white button-up with gray or black sweater+skirt can create an appealing contrast). The goal here is to go for a casual and slightly edgy yet put-together look. You’ll probably be tempted to tuck the button-up in, but don’t! It’ll look better out.

Patterned Sweatshirt with Solid Maxi Skirt
Wondering how to use that striped, plaid, or maybe even polka-dotted sweatshirt you bought on a whim and have never worn? Find a maxi skirt that matches at least one color in the pattern (for example, if your sweater is red and gray-striped, get a red or a gray skirt, etc.). This one is pretty warm even with bare legs, so it will serve you well towards the tail end of the season, especially since you can slap on some tights or leggings if necessary and wear this combo right into winter!

Have Fun with Matching
Here’s an idea that can work with a variety of styles and types of sweaters and skirts: get a skirt, sweater, and lipstick of the exact same color, and keep all other accessories or add ons else to neutral tones. You can really have fun here, because the color you chose to match could be anything; bright reds work nicely, but you can mix it up and try colors like blue or green (which will be especially bold choices for the lips).
