Stripes, Stripes, and More Stripes

Woman in stripes, walking

The zebra is probably one of the more trendsetting of animals. Stripes have been making their way to the fashion runway ever since Coco Chanel introduced the Breton striped shirt, becoming a fashion statement for young sophisticates, and still worn today by such fashion icons from Kate Moss to Kate Middleton. Although the stripes of the zebra serve as a means of camouflaging the animal, they also serve as a means of identity. Apparently, zebras recognize one another by the slightly distinct striping pattern on their hide. If stripes are a means of self-expression in the animal kingdom, then there is no reason why they should not do the same for the fashion world. Here are some ways of earning your stripes this summer.

Stripes Trending 2017
In addition to lining (literally) spring runways this year, stripes have also taken their place as major contenders on the red carpet. Both Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery and Blackish’s Yara Shahadi cemented the rainbow striped dress as fashionable evening wear for the Hollywood crowd this year for a new take on A-list evening wear.

The runway has also seen no shortage of stripes this year. Altuzarra did a nautical inspired off the shoulder dress in primary red and blue capable of doubling as for day or night duties, depending on the accessories. Proenza Shouler showed its stripes in combination with a color block scheme on a knit dress. Miu Miu went mod with a striped shirt dress, while Fendi went daring with their striped crop top, seen modeled by Gwyneth Paltrow on the February edition of In Style Magazine. Menswear pieces are all the rage with pinstriped button down borrowed from your boyfriend looks. Look to Caroline Herrera for an elegant vertical white and black striped dress and check out Tommy Hilfiger striped maxi for a cool summer look.

Wearing Stripes
While stripes may be a perfect for the runway, they can be a difficult look to pull off for the everyday. Here are some tips for wearing stripes this season:

  • Horizontal Stripes Don’t Increase Girth
Studies show this is a myth, so ignore it.
  • Bold Stripes Equal Bold Looks
If you don’t want to make big waves with your stripes, you may want to start with a more toned downed pinstripe before working your way to the wider look.
  • Go Neutral With Stripes
Pair your striped skirt or jeans with a black colored top or vice versa.
  • Don’t Be Afraid to Get Creative
Black and white is classic but don’t be afraid to think out of the box. Go for rainbow stripes if your daring, or greys with reds for a more toned down contrast.
  • Mix Prints
Stripes can look really great with florals or plaid. Think of them as a neutral piece and pair prints accordingly.

Layering Tips From The Runway

Layered clothing has had quite a history. Following the premiere of the movie “Flashdance” in 1983, the amount of clothing one woman wore in the course of the day seemed to multiply exponentially. A simple outfit might consist of a tank top with a shoulder- baring sweatshirt over it, tight pants with leg warmers, belts, headbands and layers of bracelets. There were also super baggy pants, rolled up to feature turned down high-top sneakers with striped socks peeking ours. Madonna layered her leather jackets over her miniskirts, under her famous, “Boy Toy” belt. Bananarama wore famously baggy overalls over their wifebeater tanks.

The 90’s brought its own take on layering with the emergence of grunge. Flannels were worn over shirts or tied around the waist. Leggings peeked out from under ripped jeans. Indeed, to this day, layering doesn’t appear to be going anywhere quickly.

What is behind the longevity of our love affair with layers? Layered clothing has many benefits. It is the best way to keep warm in cold weather and allows people to shed or add layers to adjust to the temperature. It lets us get maximum wear from our clothes, it allows for creativity and self-expression, and it can hide a multitude of sins. If you are contemplating adding a scarf or blazer to your wardrobe, here are a few things you may want to take into consideration.

Bottom Layering
Why not try skirts over pants or leggings? Try wrapping a dress over your trousers. The look can be work appropriate or rock festival ready.

Switch up Your seasons
Break the rules! Part of the layering trend includes combing skimpy clothes with clothes for the chillier weather. Consider putting a floral mini over long sleeves or put a dress shirt on your little black dress. Boho to practical, layering redefines the wardrobe and lets you get your money’s worth from your clothing purchases.

Wear Something Sheer
Have you ever seen something in a store that is absolute to die for, but you can’t imagine how you might wear it appropriately in public? Try wearing something over it. Sheer lace blouses can look great under a strappy dress or blazer, as can a sheer skirt over fitted pants.

Combine Textures
Create an interesting look by throwing a silk evening shirt over a cotton turtleneck. Contrasting fabrics can complement one another and give them a new definition.

Wear Heels
If there are any reasons to avoid layering, one would be that if we over -layer, we run the risk of getting lost in our clothes, especially if we are on the short side. How do we fix this? A pair of heels will lift your body from the bundle of indistinguishable clothing and transform you into a put together fashion statement. Just beware not to trip over some of the lower layers. BTW, the optimal ration for clothing top to bottom is 70:30.

Belt It
Feeling lost in all these clothes? Remind people you have a waist. You can still look svelte and sexy in your layers by cinching them with a belt. Consider belting jackets, shirts and trousers kimono style to show off your hourglass figure.

Experiment with your clothes! It will be a wardrobe overhaul and let us know if you have any interesting ideas about layering and what works and what doesn’t.

Vine Vera on Runway Trends for Winter Beauty – Vine Vera Reviews

Models walking down the runwayWinter beauty is one of the things women most look forward to every season. Where better to look for inspiration than the Runways and luxury designer Fashion Shows? So many ideas can be found and inspiration gathered through paying attention to what’s out and trending now. Perhaps you might not like the style of how certain products are being worn, but you will most likely get ideas on the colors of the season, the looks important to the season, and how each product is being worn. High fashion cosmetic application isn’t for everyone as sometimes, it’s a bit extravagant, but it definitely does set the tone for cosmetic companies and makeup artists following in hot pursuit of the trendiest looks.

At Vine Vera, we’ve done some research of our own on the runway beauty trends, so we’ve taken the guesswork out of it for you. If you want to know what the hottest looks in makeup application are now, read on.

All Natural Look

More isn’t always better. Going for a fresh, clean look with minimal makeup – or what appears to be minimal makeup – is a great look this winter. Pair a nude or light pink lipstick with some light colored blusher, such as a light pink rose hue, and top it off with some mineral powder or foundation to even out the skin tone and give a glowing look. Try using a coat of mascara and nix the eyeliner for an all-natural look that says, “I woke up like this!”

Bold Eyes and Brows

One of the hottest trends this season is wearing a boldly lined eye – both top and bottom – with bigger brows. One way to obtain this look is to use a bold, chunky eye liner pencil with good smudging capability, a blender or smudge stick or brush, and some brow filling powder. If you aren’t good with filling in the brows by hand, feel free to use eyebrow stencils, which are available nearly everywhere cosmetics are sold.

Dark Lipstick

Dark lips are making a big statement on the runways this season, and many women love the look. From dark, rich berry tones to dark reds and browns, this look is something every woman of every skin tone can appreciate, because it works well for them all. To get the appearance of bigger, fuller lips, you could line the lips just outside of the actual lip line, or even apply the lipstick as you normally would and then dot some gloss onto the center of the bottom lip and around the cupids bow to give your pout a juicy, bigger appearance.

Cat Eye Look

Whether you opt for big, bold cat eyes or a swoopy elongated wing style, cat eyes are all the rage! You can use any color eyeliner you’d like to complete this look, but traditionally, it’s done with a coal black liner. Neon colors are also very in this season, so if you’re feeling bold and are getting ready for a night out, feel free to experiment with more vivid color schemes. As a tip, to get the perfect elongated cat eye, you can use the edge of a spoon against the corner of your eye to create the first line on top and get a solid line, and then repeat the same on the bottom, and fill in the blank space that is left. It’s simple, fast, and easy – and it looks fab on any eye shape or color.
