Try The “Tissue Test” To Determine Your Skin Type

If you’re trying to choose the best skin care treatment for your skin, whether it be cleansing, moisturizing, or toning, the first step is always the same: determining your skin type. Which should be easy, right? How far off the mark can you be? But truthfully, we’re all a little unsure, and if you’re reluctant to admit confusion, you’re not alone.

You see, as it turns out, determining your skin type can be more difficult than you might think. That’s because skin type changes as you age. Acne-prone teens can grow into adults with dry sensitive skin and clear skinned twenty-somethings can develop breakouts later in life. Heaters, air conditioning, changes in weather and other external factors can also affect skin behavior. If you’re among the many who are not sure which skin type category your fall under, you may want to try the “tissue test” for an accurate read.

The Tissue Test

  1. Cleanse your face. Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face and pat dry. Remove all traces of makeup. This will clear away the daily accumulation of oil and dirt, leaving your skin in the best shape for the test. Be careful to avoid over washing.
  2. Wait an hour. This will give your skin time to return to its most natural state, restoring pH balance after cleansing. Try to avoid touching your face during this time.
  3. Dab your face with tissue.
  4. Pay most attention to your “T-zone,’ the area including the nose and forehead.

Results

Normal Skin
If you have normal skin, your skin will show no oil and no flaking skin, and feel smooth and supple. If you have this, congratulations, this is the most desirable type.

Oily Skin
A greasy tissue means greasy skin. Oily skin is also characterized by large pores and a shiny complexion.

Dry Skin
If your skin feels taut or shows dead skin flakes it means you have dry skin. It is also common for people with this skin types to have small pores. Moisturize, moisturize!

Combination
If your skin shows all three traits of the above type, join the crowd. Combination skin is the most common skin type. Usually, this means the skin in the T-zone is oily, while other parts are normals or dry.

Skin Problems
In addition to having a “type,” there are two common “problem” categories that your skin can fall under.

Sensitive skin
If your skin reacts easily to regular facial products, developing redness, itchiness, or rashes, your skin is sensitive.

Acne-Prone
Teenager of not, if you see spots, you’ve got acne-prone skin. Look for a good product with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid on the market, or visit a dermatologist for advice.

Dry Skin
Dealing with your dry skin fears is one of the easiest things you can do and it doesn’t require too much time or preparation. Investing in a good quality moisturizer is important, as well as getting a few facial loofah’s and perhaps some serums. Taking proper care of your face is essential to combating dry skin, and overcoming it. Drinking more water and perhaps taking some Vitamin E supplements as well as a Biotin supplement is also a great way to help restore the balance to your dry facial skin, and give it a more nourished, supple look.

Acne Prone Skin
If you have skin that is prone to breakouts, whether it’s one time a month or you have chronic acne breakouts, there are ways to attempt treatment at home, or ways to combat the problem with the help of a dermatologist. You can buy specialty face washes and toners from Vine Vera that are specifically meant for acne prone skin, as well as serums and gels in which you can use to treat the problem as well. Dermatologists have specialty lines of products in which you can use to alleviate symptoms and help the skin to clear up. You can also be sure to get in the habit of proper face washing at least twice per day with a medicated face wash. Aside from these options, you can also check with your gynecologist to perhaps get on a method of birth control which can balance your hormones if it is caused to a hormonal imbalance. Sometimes, this is a simple and quick fix to the problem and many women have had a lot of success with it.

Oily Skin
If you have oily skin, washing your face two to three times per day with a specialty product formulated for oily or greasy skin is a great place to start. Try to refrain from using moisturizers as these generally make greasy and oily skin even greasier and more oily, causing more problems. Controlling the oil on your face can also prevent breakouts and give your face a healthy appearance. Watching what you eat is also important as different foods can tend to cause your skin to become oily, and for someone who already has oily skin, this will make their problem increasingly worse.

Blotchy Skin
Blotchy skin can be quickly fixed with good cosmetics to hide the uneven tone. A good cover up and foundation as well as makeup palate and perhaps color corrector stick can also provide even, smooth coverage and give you a flawless finish. Give a few top brands a try and find one that works best for you.

There are many other skin problems and fears women will face each day; these are just a few of the major problems afflicting women in their day to day lives. Skin conditions and problematic skin don’t have to rule your world. Combat your skin care fears by educating yourself and being proactive.
