Summer Wine List

friends drinking wine

Ah, sweet memories of summer. You and your significant other drinking wine slushies on the back porch watching the sun go down. You and your significant other drinking pineapple moscato sangria in bed watching the sun come up. You and your significant other drinking rose spritzers on the beach watching the sun go down again. Summer just wouldn’t be summer without wine. So, whether you’re barbecuing, throwing a little get-together, or just sipping for enjoyment, here are some of the wines you need to have on your summer wine list.

Rosés For Summer
When most people think of summer wines, rosés inevitably come up first. However, most wine aficionados would agree that any time can be a good time for any wine, and most who have had rosés in the winter would agree. As long as you pair the wine with a complementary dish, the weather kind of fades into the background. In fact, according to Allie Poindexter from Henrietta Red in Nashville, “During the summer months when there is a wider array of produce available, our menu gets lighter, with heavier items replaced by simple and seasonal offerings that pair will with subtler wines.'” Below are a few favorites that Poindexter says are, “all perfect for sipping on hot summer nights;” and she’s not necessarily limiting her selection to rosés:

Corvezzo Terre si Marca Prosecco, Veneto, Italy
Pondexter point sour that this prosecco, naturally fermented and made from organic grapes, may be a little different from what you expect from the typical sparking. Poindexter says its,”subtle effervescence and floral, funky quality…makes it the perfect pairing for cheese and charcuterie.”

Friends' get-together with wine

Christoph Hock Kalkspitz Pet Nat, Kamptal, Austria
Pet-nats are made using a traditional method of producing sparkling wine in which the wine is bottled without additives before the primary fermentation is finished. The result is an unfiltered naturally carbonated wine with a taste comparable to apple cider.

Pouillon And Fils Premier Cru Brut Rose, Champagne, France
This rose and sparkling wine combo is unique in that the Pouillon family grows their own organically farmed grapes; a process not normally used in the region. The result is a pleasurably drinkable wine perfect for summer nights.

Quinta do Montalto Medieval de Ourem Rose, Lisbon Portugal
Poindexter notes that, while the dark ruby color of this wine may not be typical of most roses, drinking the wine will clarify it as pure rose. “It drinks like a rose with lots of red berry fruit and a soaring acidity,” she says, “It has an interesting woodsy character, the result of being aged in chestnut barrels.

Mica Vinho Verde, Minho, Portugal
Made from biodynamic, organic grapes, Poindexter described this vinho verde as, “super light and drinkable, ” adding that it has a “pronounced mineralogy and a low ABV of 10 percent.” and is a “fantastic pairing for oysters and crudos.”

wine glasses clinking

Arndorfer Kamptal Vorgeschmack White, Niederosterreich, Austria
Poindexter informs, “Vorgeshmack means appetizer in German, and like an appetizer this wine is meant to be an introduction into the Arndorfer family vineyards.” Apparently, it’s an enticing one. The chef says, “Reisling lands fruitiness and dynamism while Gruner Veltliner brings florals and spice.”

What are you drinking this summer? Cocktails? Or are you more of a strict wine purist? Let us know!

Reevaluating Anti-Aging: The Age Fix by Anthony Youn

Woman reading book

There’s a lot of information out there about the idea of cosmetic anti-aging; that is, preventing your body from showing visible signs of aging too early. Put another way, keeping yourself looking younger longer. But where there’s a bounty of information, there’s a bounty of misinformation too, and cosmetic anti-aging is no exception to this rule. For every certifiable fact or legitimately useful tidbit, there are a hundred misleading, false, or unsubstantiated claims.

The Age Fix, by Anthony Youn, proposes a solution to this predicament by providing an allegedly comprehensive and accurate guide to the do’s, don’t’s, how-to’s, myths and facts of cosmetic anti-aging.

Proceed with Caution
Of course, while the promise of such an extensive and endlessly useful guide to prolonging youthfulness might be incredibly tempting, a word of caution and advice to proceed with some hopeful skepticism. In other words, there is often much good that can be gleaned from resources such as this, even advice from experts is not flawless, especially if there is not a consensus of expert opinion, so go into a book like this with an open mind, but also a critical one.

Myths and Facts
One of the prime promises of The Age Fix is that the text will help you separate the myths from the facts when it comes to cosmetic anti-aging. Ever wanted a comprehensive guide that tells you what “facts” are actually true, and what are just bogus pseudoscience not worth a second look? The Age Fix promises this and more, and while it may not cover every myth in need of busting, from the looks of it, it would be an excellent place to start getting an idea of what’s true and what’s pure fiction.

How to Age Gracefully
The best way to think about The Age Fix is as a guide to aging gracefully. Before explaining this concept, it might be best to ensure understanding of what aging gracefully isn’t. With the current level of medicine and technology our society is limited to, no matter how closely you follow even the best advice about aging will not prevent you from growing older and someday dying. The sooner you accept that fact, the easier the time you’ll have with cosmetic anti-aging attempts. What aging gracefully is, however, is making sure that you retain confidence and feel good about yourself and your body all your life, and that you keep age signs like wrinkles from happening for awhile, and when you do get them (it’s inevitable), you accept them in stride, own them, and look beautiful in spite of them.

Anthony Youn’s The Age Fix is an excellent guide to graceful aging. Staying cognizant of the above warning, you’re likely to find a lot to love in its pages.

10 Ways to Boost Your Mood

Happy woman

It seems some days exist just to beat you up. You know, the days where nothing goes right and every time you think it can’t get worse, it does. When keeping upbeat seems like an impossible task, turn to one of our 10 ways to boost your mood. These 10 tips are quick ways that you can turn your mood around and increase your feelings of happiness.

Be Grateful
When nothing seems to be going right and your life just seems like a series of disappointments, it’s hard to be positive and thankful for all of the good things that you do have in your life. Susan Biali, M.D. and wellness expert suggests taking time each day to focus on three good things that happened that day or three things that you are thankful for about your life. Focusing on the good helps remind you that there is plenty in your life to be happy about. Try keeping a notebook on your bedside table and jot down three things you’re thankful for right before bed each night.

Woman listening to music

Listen to Happy Music
According to a 2013 study, listening to cheery music really can improve your mood. In this interesting study from the University of Missouri, participants who were told to focus on improving their mood by listening to happy music were able to, while those who were told the same thing but listened to somber music felt no mood effects. Additionally, the study says that it is important to not focus on “am I happy yet,” but to listen to the music as a journey to happiness. So the next time you need a quick pick-me-up, put your earbuds in and play some happy music.

Clear Out The Clutter
You don’t have to spend a whole day organizing and sorting, but getting rid of some of the clutter that surrounds you can have a significant impact on your mood. “Clutter is a reminder of things that should be getting done, but aren’t. It can make you feel like a failure,” explains Elaine Aron, Ph. D. and author of The Highly Sensitive Person. Simply disposing of trash and straightening out some piles can help alleviate a bad mood. Says Aron, “just the illusion of order is enough to ease the mind.”

Some essential oils, such as orange, lemon or lavender can lift feelings of anxiety and depression. To bust a bad mood, keep a candle or oil diffuser in your office for days with endless deadlines. Alternatively, keep a vial of your favorite essential oil blend in your purse for quick pick-me-ups.

Take a Walk
Have you ever heard the expression “you’re only one workout away from a good mood?” Turns out, that’s true. “Exercise sparks the release of feel-good endorphins, but it also satisfies something more profound: the human need to perform and excel. Exercise helps you feel like the captain of your own ship,” says Sonja Lyubomirsky, Ph. D. and author of The How of Happiness. If you can, head outside because being surrounded by nature is also a happiness booster.

Woman laughing

Laugh it Off
A study conducted by Stanford University showed that laughter increases the levels of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is frequently called “the feel good hormone” because of its ability to lift moods and increase happiness. Additionally, when you laugh you increase oxygen flow throughout your body and you calm down your body’s stress response, which results in a relaxed feeling of positivity.

Constantly griping and complaining won’t make you feel any better; in fact, it can make you feel worse and aggravate the people around you. However, there is a therapeutic benefit to venting your feelings to a loved one. “In many (though not all) situations it’s better for you to discharge negative emotions than to keep them bottled up inside. Venting helps restore your equilibrium,” says psychologist Leon F. Seltzer, M.D.

Woman eating walnut.

Snack on Walnuts
Nuts, in general, are a great snack, in moderation, but if you need to boost your mood, reach for some walnuts. A study from the University of Pittsburgh revealed that the omega-3 fatty acid content of walnuts made people less prone to depression and easier to get along with. Using 106 healthy adults, researchers looked at the blood levels of omega-3 fats and those with the highest levels performed 49 to 58 percent better than those with lower levels. Walnuts also boost levels of serotonin, a brain chemical that increases feelings of positivity.

Fake it Till You Make it
Those times when you feel the least like smiling are the times when you should be smiling. There are studies that indicate that muscular movements in your face, or adjusting your posture, actually can boost your happiness. Smiling is effective because “if you act like you’re a happier person, you can experience all these positive social consequences. You make more friends. People are nicer to you. And these things can have real consequences,” says Lyubomirsky.

Women shopping

Spend Smart
For some people, retail therapy is a go-to when feelings of anxiety or depression surface. Surprisingly, there are ways that you can spend money and not feel the guilt later. Miriam Tatzel, Ph. D., psychologist from Empire State College surveyed 329 shoppers and found that those who spent money on experiences – a great meal, a wine tasting or a concert – were happier than those who splurged only on consumer goods like shoes or sunglasses. An added bonus is that you often involve family and friends in experiences, and strong social support also goes a long way in lifting your mood.

Not every day of your life is going to be a good one, but when you come up against hardships there are things that you can do to change and elevate your mood. Practice these 10 ways to boost your mood and see which one works best for you, and share these with your friends and family because everybody needs a little lifting up sometimes.
