Show Some Skin In These Beach Fashion Picks

Friends at the beach

When sea bathing first became fashionable in the 18th century, ladies were known to sew weights into the hems of their muumuu like bathing gowns to keep the garment from riding up and showing their legs. It would seem that they would rather end up at the bottom of the ocean than be caught with a bit of flesh exposed. Needless to say, times have changed quite a bit. Nowadays, not only is a tiny bathing suit de rigueur, but so is a picture of said owner modeling the piece posted somewhere on social media. That means you need to be in the know about all the latest swimwear fashion. Here is a little guide for showing some skin at the beach this year.

High-waist bottom swimwear

Swim Wear Bottoms

  • Brazilian
Brazilian cut bikini and swimsuits refer to suits that are narrower in the back than most moderate and full coverage bottom. So named because of their rise to fashion in Brazil, these cuts are experiencing wide popularity in Latin America and many parts of Europe. The Brazilian cut bikinis usually feature a low rise in the front and are not for the modest.
  • String Bottoms
String bottoms have many versions. You can find thin strings, bikinis with tie sides, drawstrings, and even hipster bottoms that tie at the thighs. Most string bikini bottoms are low rise and come in Brazilian or moderate cuts, but their best feature may be their adjustability. The strings allow you to adjust them for greater comfort and more flattering fit than their more traditional counterparts.
  • Hipster-Boyshorts
Hipster bottoms are best described as boy shorts or short shorts for bikinis. This means a low bottom with full rear coverage. The major benefit of boy shorts is that they can be a really sexy way to wear a bikini while providing a little extra coverage.
  • High Waist
With everything in retro, high-waisted bikinis have been the essence of pinup fashion in the last few years. Characterized by a waistline rising to the belly button, high waisted bikinis provide high fashion and more generous coverage to cover up those less than flattering areas.

Types of Tops

  • Bandeau
Bandeaus are tops lacking straps, strings, or sleeves, although some come with removable straps. Certain bandeaus may come with cups, which are a must for support if you have a larger bust, while others are more formless. Still, other styles may feature closures in the back.
  • Bralette
First popularized as a type of 1930’s lingerie, the bralette has no underwire and is synonymous with comfort. It may be best described as a less constricting sports bra.
  • Balconet
This is a revealing top style, featuring low cups to create the effect of a rounded bust area. The style offers less coverage than more traditional tops, with most support coming from the band at the bottom.
  • Triangle
The most popular top style, the triangle top is named for the triangular shape of its silhouette. Most tie at the back or neck and do not feature underwire.
  • Halter
This refers to any top that ties at the neck, providing a considerable amount of breast push up.
Some tie at the back as well.
