Fashion Choices That Hide Problem Areas

So you’ve got your dad’s eyes, grandma’s freckles, Aunt Suzie’s infectious laugh, and your mom’s thighs. And though you may never want to trade in your mom, you may sometimes want to trade in your thighs. But so what? Perfection is overrated and that’s what baggy clothes were made for. So things being as they are, let’s talk about the best fashion choices for hiding those problem areas.

Woman with white top

Create Curves On Top
You can draw attention away from your curves by wearing something that adds visual dimension to your shoulder and bust area. It will play up the top of your body while drawing attention away from your hips and thighs. Look for:

  • Horizontal necklines, like boat necks or straight necks. Wrap necklines may slim your torso, but focus attention on your bust.
  • Light colors, like light pink or white.
  • Bright colors, like electric blues, reds, and oranges.Eye-catching details like polka dots, stripes, sequins, or large collars.
  • Kimono or bell sleeves.
  • A good push up bra or bust enhancing neckline, like a bustier.
  • Scarves. Need we say more?

Downplay Curves
If you want to minimize hips, butt, and thighs, try the following:

  • Dark colors, especially dark wash jeans or dress pants.
  • Vertical details like stitches, pleats, and decorative zippers.
  • Tops that end just below the hip bone. (Avoid lengths across the across your thighs and hip length tops.)
  • Thigh and hip hugging shapewear.
  • Heels.

shift dress

Minimize Middle
If weight gain around the midsection is problematic, you probably want to choose something that fits loosely around the middle and more tightly elsewhere. Your best choices include:

  • Slim cut pants, to show off slim legs.
  • Shift dresses: These will look very flattering, especially with high heels.
  • Tunics, which glide over the middle, emphasizing other body parts.
  • Empire waist tops.

You want to avoid wearing anything that draws too much attention to the middle, such as belts, waist cinching tops, and high-rise pants.

Pencil skirt

Hourglass
If you’ve got that hourglass body, proportions are no problem, but some clothes may make your curves look more like angles. You need to find clothes that move with your body naturally. Stay away from shapeless styles, like cardigans, tunics, and baby doll dresses. To make the most of your curves, look for:

  • Pencil skirts, great for cinching the waist and skimming the hips.
  • V-Neck shirts: A tight fitting top will flatter without exaggerating.
  • High waisted pants draw attention to a slim waist.
  • Wrap dress: The diagonal cut will hit all the right places.

Bottom Slimming Pants
To create a lean line on your lower body, the best pants are flare legs, straight and skinny, boot cuts, and pants with simple waistbands.

Skirts and Dresses with Width and Volume
It may seem counterintuitive, but skirts that are wider at the bottom usually balance out wider hips. Steer away from too-full skirts in favor of something with an a-line shape. Flared skirts and full circle skirts will also flatter, as will maxi and gypsy skirts.

statement necklace

Statement Jewelry
Eye-catching earrings and necklaces draw attention upward. Examples include gemstones, metal discs, and chandelier and feather earrings.

Short Jackets
Jackets that hit a few inches above the hipline will help to make your legs look thinner and longer. Hip length jackets can also work, as long as you wear a suitable bottom, such as a dark colored A-line skirt or pair of dress pants. Short leather jackets are a good choice, as are cropped denims.

Never underestimate the power of good underwear! It can hide a multitude of sins!

The Best Spring Colors For Your Skin Tone

Colors can be very attractive, but as much as you like them in the makeup palette, they may not be the most flattering colors for you. So, in the spirit of saving you some heartache, and sparing you from unnecessary purchases, here’s the skinny on finding the right spring color for your skin tone.

Here’s The Deal
Your skin has undertones. They may not be very apparent, but they come out when you hold another color up to it. That’s why certain colors can make you look gorgeous and others can make you look like you’ve just eaten something disagreeable. To tell which colors best complement your skin tone, you need to first establish what your skin tone is. Take off your makeup and try a drape test to figure it out.

Cool skin tone

Cool
Are you on of the cool kids? If your hair is blonde, ash brown, dark brown, or black, and your skin has pink undertones, you are! Still not sure? Hold up some springy royal blues and bright pinks and basic blacks and whites to your face. Look good? You’re cool!

Light cool
If your hair has a light ashy tone, and your skin is pale with pink undertones, you may be cool light, or light cool. To make sure, hold up some light blues, pinks, and lavenders. If they flatter, you’re light cool.

Warm
If you’ve gone for strawberry blond tints and your skin tans well, it’s all about orange. If orange makes you look radiant, you’re getting warm.

Warm skin

Light Warm
If you’ve got a reddish tint but your skin is fair, or you have darker skin with a peachy glow, then oranges, greens and browns may be overwhelming. Try beachy spring corals, beiges and peaches instead. If they make your eyes pop, you’re a light warm.

Your Best Spring Colors
So now that you know what skin tone you have, here are a few colors you may want to include in your springtime wardrobe.

Orchid
Cool tones, rejoice. Your color for the spring is a radiant orchid. Whether it be maxi dress, flirty sandals or blouses, be sure to include this standout jewel tone in your spring collection.

Lavender

Soft Lavender
Light cool tones will want to find themselves draped in soft lavender this spring. Don a lavender sun dress for some fairy tale spring inspiration and make this pastel your signature color this season.

Cayenne Pink
Warm tones will find the yellow and orange undertones in coral pink great complements to your golden skin tones. A standout color on the spring fashion runways, cayenne pink is going to be huge this year, and it’s going to look terrific on you.

Woman in yellow dress

Lemon Yellow
When life hands you “lemon,” wear it! Nothing says spring quite like a warm, buttery yellow and it’s just the thing for light and warm tones this year. Light warms will do best with lighter desaturated yellow, while true warms can go for the bold canary colors. Get your yellow on in sunnies, skirts/ and platform heels for some fun in the sun this spring.

So which skin tone are you? Whether you’re cooling off or warming up for the spring, we want to hear all about you’re fashion adventures. Please keep us posted.

Fashion and Style For The Full Figured Woman

If the average US women is 162.9 pounds, and wears a size 14, how did fashion brands and retailers ever get the idea that anyone over a size 10 could not be fashionable? Flemish Painter Peter Paul Rubens would have been horrified with the dimensions of the average runway model and the Venus de Milo would probably have been rejected by standard modeling agencies.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe was certainly not waif -like, and Superwoman Lynda Carter was never shy about her curves. Rock and roll’s Queen sang the praises of the “Fat Bottomed Girls” in the 1970’s and even U2 had to admit that “Big Girls Are Best.”

So, why should it be that fuller figures are not accepted in the fashion world? Well, if Full Figured Fashion Week is anything to go by, things are changing. Here’s some expert style and fashion advice for the full figured woman.

Work To Play
According to Lawrence Zarian, a.k.a. the Fashion Guy, a white tailored French cuff shirt and a brick red sweater duster are must haves for every day fashion. These pieces can be worn separately, or paired with neutral colored boot cut slacks and a thick belt for waist line definition.

Jacket

The Icon Collection
Inspired by the runways of Fashion Week Milan, Paris, and London, the Icon Collection offers sophisticated women more savvy fashion choices. Try some black harem waist pants with a grey off the shoulder top for a touch of elegance; pair with a riding coat and signature jewelry pieces. Zarian ensures that harem pants can be a great look for fuller figured women, as long as it is balanced with a full cut top. The riding coat will lend the illusion of a sleek silhouette. See Jennifer Hudson modeling her new harem pants for inspiration!

Mad Women
Although the finale is behind us, the influence of the TV show “Mad Men” is still very much alive. The character of Joan Holloway, portrayed by Christina Hendricks, combines curvy with vintage in the hit show, putting the pencil skirt and skinny belt back on the list of “must have” items.

Pair your classic tweed pencil skirt with an electric blue light weight sweater; something with a ribbed waistline can be very flattering. Top with a leather jacket for a modern twist on this 60’s look and grab a croc bag to complete it.

Beyond the Workplace
If you’ve got a dinner date planned after your nine to five shirt is over, it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to go home and change. You can wear your turtle green key-hole neck dress with your faux leather belt topped by a cardigan for a chic workplace look, and strip off the cardigan and belt before dinner. Grab your croc bag and you’re good to go.

LBD
No female wardrobe should be without the little black dress, regardless of size.

LBD

A black drape front dress is a great sexy look, and don’t forget to show off those shoulders. As for jewelry, Zarian says, “The hottest trend right now is to double up on your cuffs and bump it with bohemian pieces.” He recommends a back smoothing bra for a smooth, shapely look.

What other items do you think belong in the full figured wardrobe? Let us know your version of sexy!

Show Off Your Couple Style

When couples with style come to mind, few can compete with fashion icons, Sonny and Cher. Be it Nehru jackets, bell-bottoms, straight bangs, or platforms, this couple rocked it, and nothing was off the table, with little separating “his” from “hers.”

A couple that shops together stays together, as they say, and if you’re lucky enough to share a passion for fashion with your significant other, it can be a great bonding experience and garner a lot of second looks from passersby.

If you’re looking for couple fashion inspiration, here’re a few ways to show off your inner Barbie and Ken.

Why Couple Style Is In

For a while, the image of a couple with matching outfits brought forth images of matching sweatsuits and retirement communities. However, all that seems to be changing. Even Drake and Rhianna, whose relationship status is still up in the air, were rocking the twin look at several paparazzi-worthy events. So why the sudden acceptance?

Couple style with sunglasses

One thing that may explain the fashion resurgence is the movement toward the blurring of gender lines in today’s fashions. Designers like J.W. Anderson employ male runway models that are just likely to wear makeup and skirts as their female counterparts. Another reason might be the onset of the digital age: dressing alike makes it seem like you’ve got a follower in real life.

If you and your mate want to look more fashionably compatible, here are a few suggestions.

Black and white stripes
If you want to spice up a casual date, you might want to try his and her black and white striped shirts. Hers can be black on white, his white on black. Complete her look with a mini or pencil skirt, while he can stick to shorts or trousers.

Suspenders
Suspenders are a great way to show couple solidarity. You can wear jeans or pants in contrasting or matching colors and add extra pizzazz with a scarf knotted at the neck or a wool cap for an “Oliver Twist” look.

Justin and Selena
Even if the couple didn’t survive, the fashion legacy lives on. Who could forget the images of Selena’s red silk dress complemented by Justin’s red pocket hanky?

Matching Suits
If you want to put the “power” in “power couple” try matching pinstriped tailored suits. Layer over black turtlenecks or button fronts.

Couple style

Movie Attire
For trips to the movies, keep it casual. Guys can pair some nice khakis with a button down or polo. Ladies can dress down to match your man with some boyfriend jeans, and match button-downs or tees with flats, or dress it up with printed pants, a solid top, and heels.

Dinner and Dancing
If am upscale restaurant and lounge is on the agenda, guys can stick with a business casual look. Think nice slacks, a shirt, and blazer jacket. Ladies can go for a bit more of the glitz and glam with a beaded LBD, killer heels, and some shiny accessories.

Sporting Events
If you’re looking for a great way to connect as a couple, you can show off your style at a sporting event. Guys can just stick to jeans and team jersey, and girls can do pretty much the same thing, or feminize with skinny jeans, tank, and heels. Team baseball caps are a great touch for either guy or gal.

So what do you do to show your couple style? Let us know how the two of you coordinate!

Beauty Prep For Valentine’s Day

You actually talked your boyfriend into getting tickets to “Fifty Shades Darker” on Valentine’s Day. You are so excited. That Christian Gray is so bad! No wonder Anastasia Steele can’t help herself! Ok, so maybe you had to do a little arm-bending to get your guy to go with, but you think that once he sees the movie, he’ll change his tune. One thing is for sure, though. You’re going to have to look your best. You’ve got Rita Ora and Dakota Johnson to compete with. Spoken for or looking for, you’ve got to look great on Valentine’s Day. If you’re searching for ways to make sure you’re red hot on the big day, here are some tips on beauty prep.

Woman taking bath
Shower or Bath
Let your pre V-Day pampering start with a shower of bath. Kill two birds with one stone by applying vitamin E oil or a moisture mask before you step in. The steam will help the moisture penetrate your skin, and while you’re at it, you may want to put some whitening strips on those teeth. If you feel bloated, try adding some Epsom salt to your bath. The magnesium in the salt will help to draw excess fluids and toxins from your body. Add two cups to the bath water and sit for ten minutes.

Exfoliate
Treat your skin to exfoliating gloves and a gentle scrub to rev up circulation. Don’t forget your hands and feet, you may be doing some touching later on.

De-fuzz
Ok, so maybe this is a less glamorous part of the process, but a necessary one. Post exfoliation is the best time for de-fuzzing because you’ve just removed dead skin cells for a closer shave. Use a moisturizing shave cream for extra softness.

Fragrance
Ah! The scent of a woman. The next step is to start layering on the fragrance. Start with a moisturizing body wash followed by a body creme and perfume with the same scent to get the full effect.

Mani/ Pedi
A crucial part of beauty prep, the mani /pedi should begin with some good cuticle oil applied to your finger and toenails. After pushing back your cuticles, apply your favorite therapeutic moisturizer to your feet and hands and then pick your shade. Rita Ora Red of Dakota Johnson pink? It’s up to you!

Woman with curled hair
Hair
Now for your crowning glory. Try long loose curls for long hair. or a deep side part with bangs swept to the side for shorter hair or a bob. Remember, the focus is easy touchable hair, so try and stick with a soft look.

Makeup
Prime your skin with an illuminating primer followed by foundation for a glowing, dewy base. Follow up with a pink- toned blush. A gray- toned palette is best for smoky eyes. Apply the darkest color near your lash line, lightening gradually as your move up. (Fifty shades, anyone?) Rim your top and bottom lashes with a black liner and two coats of black mascara. For a softer look, sweep a pale color across the lids and a soft brown liner under and over your eyes. Finish with two coats of brown mascara.

Lips
Make sure your lips are kissable by exfoliating with a cotton swab and baking soda. Next apply a red, pink, or nude gloss. This will soften the look of the lips once the color is applied. Spray perfume in all the right spots, and you’re set to go!

Did it work? We want the full report! Let us know about your Valentines Day success.

Chic, Casual Wardrobe Basics

Have you heard? Barbie’s gone casual chic. It should be no surprise. After all, if anyone has more clothes than all the Kardashians put together, it’s Barbie. Barbie’s casual chic 2-pack is standard Barbie fare. She’s got some black and pink leggings printed with electric guitars and a Barbie Rockers jersey, as well as a tie dyed denim shorts set. The only anomaly? The pack comes with a pair of patent leather lace up Lady Gaga boots with three centimeter heels. (scaled down, of course) Who is this woman’s stylist? While you can spend all day debating the propriety of Barbie dolls in S and M heels, it may be more productive for you to cultivate your own casual chic collection. Let’s talk about the comfortable basics no woman’s wardrobe should be without.

The White Cotton T
Crew neck or V neck, you need a white T shirt. Whether you’re layering or making a statement look, the white T shirt is an absolute casual essential.

Woman in sweater
Crewneck Sweater
If you want to stay comfortable cozy in the cooler months, a lightweight knit is the way to go. Wear it over a collared blouse for a preppy look or as a sexy topper for jeans or a pencil skirt.

Skinny Jeans
Whether it’s Paris Hilton or Adam Levine, the importance of a great fitting pair of skinny jeans can never be overestimated. High rise styles help to lengthen and slim legs in classic blue or black.

Black Pumps
As any dyed in the wool fashionista will tell you, if there is anything no wardrobe should be without, it’s a pair of classic black pumps. They go with everything from jeans to business suits to cocktail dresses and can be suited to any occasion.

Bright Colored Cross Body Bag
Want to add some pep to your look? Grab a colorful cross-body. Smaller than a tote and larger than a clutch, these bags are just the right size to do some serious shopping while still being able to fit down the aisle.

White Button Down
You’ve got your crew neck sweater, now you’ve got the collared shirt to put under it. Do a crisp classic look in all white or put it under a blazer for some professional polish.

Woman in pencil skirt
Pencil Skirt
Slenderizing and slinky, the pencil skirt can be great for the office or for the weekends. Paired with a silk camp or t-shirt and go retro, glam or preppy.

Cropped Moto Jacket
Add a bit of tough to your sexy. The moto jacket is an ageless fashion piece that can be worn with jeans or over a silky slip dress, it’s worth the splurge.

Menswear Look Watch
Women know the sexy look and feel of wearing men’s clothing, why not a men’s watch. It can be a great fashion piece for basics and can also be layered with a chain bracelet and bangle.

No need to coordinate an outfit. If you’ve got a wrap dress, it’s all grab, wrap and go. Plus, it makes for a flattering silhouette,
