Admit it. Anytime you hear the words Korean and beauty product in the same sentence, you start to drool a little bit. What is it about the Korean beauty routine that makes us all feel like we westerners just somewhat inferior? Are we just lacking that bit of Asian discipline that drives the Korean women beauty perfectionism? Is it the concept of superior Eastern wisdom which makes us believe the Korean women hold the secrets to great beauty? Or is it simply that the Korean women just look so darn good? Whatever it is that makes us westerners go so crazy for any information beauty related Korean women have to offer, get ready for some more of it. Here are some secrets to flawless skin from the women who wrote the book on it.

Steam Your Face In the Shower
Korean facial massage parlors are as commonplace in South Korea as Starbucks Cafes are in America. Use circular motions with your fingers and also light tapping in rotating patterns starting on the forehead, then continuing to the cheekbones and cheeks, eventually ending at the jawline. Use an oil cleanser for an added benefit.

Use A Charcoal Sheet Mask
The charcoal sheet mask is all the rage in Korea. Simply apply it to your face for 15 to 20 minutes and let it work its detoxifying and exfoliating powers.

Exfoliate with A Warm Damp Wash Cloth
Soak a washcloth in hot water, and massage your face using circular strokes. It’s a known Korean youth booster.

Layer a Facial Essence between Two Moisturizers
If you’re not Korean, you may not even use two moisturizers, much less a facial essence between them. Essences are mild solutions with nutrients to hydrate your skin after cleansing. Follow with a serum, and then add a moisturizer for elasticity and hydration.

Apparently, it’s not all perfect when it comes to Korean skin. The Korean blurring trick involves using one or more coverage products with a makeup brush to camouflage unwanted perfections. An air cushion foundation is the signature Korean cosmetic for blurring like a pro because it allows you to go from very sheer to very opaque coverage without looking heavy.

Use an Ampoule
Koreans describe the ampoule as a “serum on steroids.” It has the highest amount of active ingredients needed to do their work in the shortest amount of time. Apply a few drops before the essence to treat dullness, acne, and hyper pigmentation.

Use an Overnight Sleeping Mask
You know that your skin is working its hardest at cell recovery while you sleep, which makes it the best time to moisturize. Just apply an intensive sleeping mask before bed, and wake up to skin rejuvenation.

Mouth Stretches
Perhaps you can multitask in the car, by saying A-E-I-O-U in an exaggerated way three times on your way to work. It may improve circulation and brighten skin tone.

What tricks of the trade are you borrowing from the Koreans for flawless skin? Let us know what you think of the sage Korean beauty advice, and how much of it you’re willing to incorporate into your daily routine.

Beauty Products That Can Be Used All Year Around

The changing of the seasons can be nice. With each season comes new opportunities, and a time for new beginnings; however changing seasons can also be a time of great upheaval. A new season means a new wardrobe, new cosmetics, and a whole new lineup of cable television shows that we need to adjust our schedules, too. It’s nice to know there are a few things we can count on all year around. Here are a few staples of the beauty routine which don’t require seasonal adjustment, or resetting our Tivos.

Even though sunscreen is often thought of as a product intended for use in the summer, you probably know that it is crucial to use sunscreen in all season. Although UV rays are less intense in the cooler weather, the general rule is: if there’s sun, there should be sunscreen. Look for broadband sunscreen, which provides protection against both UVA and UVB light, with an SPF of at least fifteen to avoid skin damage, sunburns, aging, and skin cancer.

Although the reasons for moisturizer may differ from season to season, it is always a crucial component of the beauty routine. Summer heat and sunlight can dry skin, and winter’s low humidity levels and and dry air can rob skin of moisture, making moisturizer a must 360 days of the year. Omitting moisturizer can lead to deeper wrinkles later on, leading to low levels of chronic inflammation that eventually result in a breakdown of collagen and accelerated aging.

Lip Balm
You may think of chapped lips as a winter only condition, but the truth is, lips can get dry and scaly at any time of year. Use a good lip balm, high in emollients. Look for petrolatum on the label, to lock in moisture, and dimethicone to seal off splits and cracks. Apply early in the day and often throughout, and keep a tube with you for frequent reapplication.

Primer is a beauty must-have that makes foundation and face makeup go on smoother or stay on longer, and can be a life saver in all types of weather. Extreme temperatures, wind, tearing eyes, perspiration, and traveling can all take a toll on makeup application. According to celebrity makeup artist, Joanna Schlipp, “No matter what the weather is like outside, this step (primer application) will save you a lot of time and effort.” Schlipp also recommends primers to help smooth fine lines, and conceal wrinkles and large pores. She recommends a green primer to help color correct redness from rosacea and acne.

Just because you put away your swim suit, it doesn’t mean you have to turn off your glow. Keep your summer edge with a light bronzer for fall to keep a natural sun kissed glow. Use with a highlighter to keep your face radiant all year long.

What skin products are you using 360 days this year? Let us know which products you just can’t live without, no matter what season we’re in.

When to Throw Your Beauty Products Away

Used cosmetics

It’s just about time for spring cleaning to commence and while you probably do a thorough job of cleaning out your closet, you may be neglecting one area completely: your beauty products. Beauty products do have a shelf life, but most of us keep all of our items because you never know when you might need that turquoise liner or neon orange lipstick. A good general rule to go by is if you don’t use a product at least once a month, and it isn’t designated for special occasions only, you should probably part with it. However, if you have a hard time discarding anything or knowing exactly when it’s time to clean out your cosmetics bag, check out the guidelines below to keep your makeup safe and your face clear.

Foundation and Face Products
Both liquid and powder foundations tend to have a shelf life of anywhere between one and two years. Powder foundations, whether loose or pressed, tend to last on the longer side and are often good for two years while liquid foundations may only last one depending on the formulation of the product. It can be so hard to part with the absolute perfect foundation because it can take forever to find it, but it’s important to let go of old products. If you start to notice an odd smell or the “tiger” like stripes that can occur on the inside of the bottle, chuck the foundation. “If the pigments are no longer uniform in a bottle, they’re certainly not going to be uniform when you put it on your skin,” says Ni’Kita Wilson, a cosmetic chemist. She continues saying that if you continue to use these foundations, “…you’re going to look patchy and blotchy, so the color just won’t be even.”

Your powder bronzers, blushes and highlighters, like powder foundations, last for about two years so you don’t have to worry about tossing these all the time. Cream or liquid blushes, bronzers or highlighters have a shelf life of about one year, but if you notice any smell or changes in the texture of the product, it’s best to throw it away and start a new product.

Powder eyeshadow

Eye Products
Powder eyeshadows in either loose or pressed form have a pretty long shelf life. Wilson says you can use these products pretty much until they crumble, but there are some caveats. If you’ve ever dipped a wet brush, finger or other applicators into a powder eyeshadow for a more intense pigment on the lid, you’ll want to get rid of these before they disappear. “While powdered eyeshadows do have preservatives, they’re not meant to be wet. The preservative system may not be strong enough to actually withstand that kind of a treatment,” advises Wilson. You can keep those palettes you invested in longer than some of your other makeup. Liquid, gel and cream eye products along with mascara should be used for about six months and then disposed of. After about the three-month mark, liquid eye products begin to gather bacteria that can cause eye irritation or infection.

Lip Products
Opened lip products, even if you just opened it to switch the color, shouldn’t stay in your collection for more than a year. This 12-month rule applies to any liners, lipsticks, glosses or lip treatments.

You may have glanced at your beauty products and seen a small image of a container and a number, but not realized what it meant. Many products come with this image and it indicates how long the product can safely be used. Paying attention to these can help keep your beauty products safe and effective. When it comes to spring cleaning, it can be hard to part with old favorites, but throwing away bad makeup makes space in your cosmetics collection for newer colors, formulas and products. Know when to throw your beauty products away to keep your skin, and body, healthy and happy.
