There are all types of teachers. There’s the boring teacher, like the teacher in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” who calls out the attendance while the kids shoot spitballs at each other. There’s the fun teacher like Jack Black in “Rock School” who plays AC/DC songs with his class. There’s the bad teacher, like Cameron Diaz in the appropriately named “Bad Teacher,” who curses and smokes, and there’s the strict teacher, like J.K. Simmons in “Whiplash” whose mind games are so intense, he leaves his students with lifelong inferiority complexes.
Love “em or hate ’em, everybody has to deal with teachers and, let’s face it, they are the reason we do not have to commit ourselves to a life in food service industries. So, at this back to school time of year, let’s take a moment to think of the ways to recognize the people who have saved our lives.
We know teachers as people who teach us, but how much do we really know about them as people? Why not have them fill out a form telling parents, students, and fellow staff members about their likes, dislikes, and hobbies. That way you will know how you can best show your appreciation for them throughout the year.
Give A Gift
While you do not want to buy the success of your child with an over the top gift, a small gift bag consisting of contributions from parents and staff members may be appropriate. Classroom supplies are always welcome, as they are pragmatic as well as thoughtful. In addition, many teachers end up spending their own money on school supplies and copy making, so financial contributions are also welcome.
Class Up The Teacher’s Lounge
What teacher wouldn’t appreciate a little dish of candy and some fresh flowers in the lounge? Get creative with air fresheners and maybe some of the students’ artwork to decorate and cheer up the atmosphere.
What a great way to let teachers know that they are appreciated. You’ve probably seen relaxation kits or items in your favorite health and beauty store. Body massagers are always welcome, as is a nice scented candle or some coupons to a masseuse or salon.
Buy Lunch Or Breakfast
You can host a little potluck or catered affair for the whole staff or just give a special treat to your favorite teachers, like a cupcake or pastry. Consider bringing a box of doughnuts and fresh fruit and coffee into the teacher’s lounge for a breakfast affair. There are some very revolutionary things being done with doughnuts these days!
Write A Note
The right words are sometimes the most effective way to bond with someone. Discuss how much you appreciate the service they are doing for your children and how you look forward to communicating with them throughout the year. Let them know how you can be reached and when you are available to start the year off on the right foot.
