The Dark Chocolate Study

According to a group of German researchers who had studied dark chocolates to determine if it really contained substances that helped in protecting the skin, eating dark chocolates can allow you to increase 11% skin thickness, reduce 42% scaliness, increase 16% density, reduce 30% roughness, increase 13% moistness and reduce 25% UV induced reddening. This study was conducted on 24 women between the ages of 16 – 65. Talk about your smoother and silkier skin fantasies coming true by indulging in another one of your fantasies – chocolates.

The Cacao Bean

Chocolates are made from beans derived from the cacao fruit. Cacao beans are famous for their medicinal properties for centuries. These beans are considered to be extremely rich in antioxidants and can therefore help in protecting the skin from the free radicals present in the environment as well as the harmful UV rays of the sun. Given that 100gms of cacao beans contain 10000mg of flavanol antioxidants, they’re definitely the best sources of antioxidants for the human body.

The world is full of skin damaging problems such as chemicals, smoke, pollution and smoke. All of these issues give birth to free radicals that steal electrons from the stable molecules located close by, thereby transforming the formerly stable molecules into free radicals. They hurt the human body by leading to skin damage, loss of elasticity, wrinkles and cancer. Antioxidants are the best way of combating these free radicals because they donate one of their own electrons in order to neutralize the unhealthy chain. Moreover, even after donating their own electron, antioxidants remain stable and unaffected from the entire process. And what’s the one thing that gives you a lot of antioxidants? Yes, go grab a chocolate.Cacao pod, beans and powder

Benefits of Eating Chocolate

It’s not just about offering antioxidants. If it was just that, you’d still debate between gaining a pound and getting some antioxidants. But, chocolates are known to offer you with a world of goodness. Here are some of the main benefits of eating chocolates.

  1. Beautiful looking skin. Most people used to believe that eating chocolates could end up harming the skin. However, studies have proved that chocolate is actually extremely beneficial for the skin. As mentioned before, they are rich in antioxidants, thereby helping to make the skin smooth and firm. They also help in nourishing dry skin and contain flavanols that can protect your skin from the damage caused by the harmful UV rays of the sun.
  2. Good for the heart. Studies have shown that chocolates offer a number of cardiovascular benefits such as reducing the chances of having a stroke and lowering blood pressure. However, you need to ensure that you balance your chocolate intakes with proper exercise and workouts.
  3. Rejuvenate your hair. Chocolates are made from cacao, a pure form of cocoa. Cacao is considered to be excellent for the hair as it helps it to get back its shine and rebuild its structure. Cacao butter is already used as a common hot oil treatment to condition the hair.
  4. Reduce stress. A Choco bar is considered to be one of the best stress busters in the world. Scientists actually managed to prove that people eating chocolates had lower stress hormone levels. Since stress affects your skin and body in many negative ways eating chocolate can also lead to better health and looks.
  5. Become happy. Eating a chocolate can give you a world of happiness. No wonder, you always want  chocolate after a bad breakup or when something goes terribly wrong.
  6. Prevent signs of aging. Chocolates defend your skin against free radicals and therefore help to negate the damage caused. This allows the body to prevent and/ or delay common signs of aging such as discoloration, fine lines and wrinkles.
  7. Protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. Studies have also shown that chocolates offer a natural form of sun protection that can reduce the redness caused by sun damage.

Scientific Proof

According to a study published in The Journal of Nutrition, participants who drank cocoa that consisted of 326mg of flavanos – the same amount that is found in a Hershey’s Dark Chocolate bar—for a period of 3 months managed to boast of having a stronger resistance to the harmful UV rays as well as better and stronger skin texture. Even though this study was considered to be preliminary, the findings have already been endorsed in other studies. The study also backs up studies that claimed similar results for chocolate consumption in the past.

Furthermore, the Chemistry Central Journal had also shown that chocolate is an excellent source of antioxidants as it contains a greater number of flavanols and polyphenols when compared to fruit juice. Researchers also determined that when consumed in moderation, chocolates are actually extremely healthy for the human body.

However, these findings do not imply that you can benefit from drinking cocoa. All you need is a few ounces of chocolate each day in order to boast of silkier, brighter and smoother looking skin.

Getting Benefits From Eating Chocolates

Before you rush off to the supermarket to stock up on chocolate bars, you need to understand that when milk and dairy products are mixed with cocoa, the antioxidant absorption is reduced. Therefore, you need to look for chocolates that offer you with a minimum of 50% cacao (commonly present in dark chocolates). Furthermore, you also need to make sure that you don’t consume more than 3 – 4 ounces in a given day. Many might prefer dark chocolates for its woody and intense flavor, but many people hate the taste of dark chocolates as well. And when it comes to deriving the benefits of eating chocolate, dark chocolates are your only option. So, if you’re one of those who don’t like dark chocolates, simply stick to your skin care products instead.
