Caring for Dry Skin

Dry skin can be extremely uncomfortable and it can also go a long way in ruining the way you look as it leads to fissures and cracks in the skin. Dry skin can result out of a number of causes. It could be hereditary or it could be due to the low humidity levels that prevail during the winter months. Dry skin is also known to come along with medical conditions such as thyroid or asthma and aging. Those suffering from dry skin need to understand that common habits such as scrubbing, washing hands with harsh soaps and using harsh cleansing agents can actually do a lot of harm. It is important to ensure that you refrain from all such products and follow a few simple steps to get back your smooth and beautiful looking skin.

Make sure that you don’t take a long and hot shower. Hot water can strip away essential oils from your skin and staying for long under a hot shower can truly worsen your condition. Make sure that you stay for 5 – 10 minutes under warm water every day and try to stay away from hot water completely. It also helps to use gentle cleansers or shower gels instead of those harsh soaps. Furthermore, don’t forget to moisturize while your skin is still moist.

Cleanse Gently
Using gentle soaps to cleanse your body is an excellent solution for those suffering with dry skin. Products that have antibacterial additives and deodorants can actually be really harsh on the skin. It also helps to use  cleansers that include ceramides. These ceramides help to keep the moisture within your skin. According to dermatologists, you should always use neutral – pH products and non detergent cleansers to cleanse your skin. This means that if you’re suffering from dry skin, you need to avoid commercial soaps completely.

Exfoliation allows you to get rid of your dead skin cells and allow you healthier skin to take their place. Exfoliation is extremely important for any skin care routine and you should always use salt or sugar scrubs while showering. Exfoliation also helps to make the moisturizing process more effective.

Choose the Perfect Moisturizer
You don’t need to spend a bomb on moisturizers to get something that suits your skin. All you need to do is to check the ingredients on the label for ceramides, glycerin and Dimethicone, Mineral oil and petroleum jelly or Hyaluronic acid. Ceramides, glycerin and Dimethicone can help your skin to retain its moisture content. Similarly, hyaloronic acid allows your skin to hold water while mineral oils and petroleum jelly ensure that you lose less moisture while having a bath. Don’t forget to apply a sunscreen that offers SPF 30 protection.

If you’re one of those who prefer to have natural skin care strategies at your disposal, try using olive oil as a skin care solution. Anyone who has used olive oil for their skin would swear by the fact that it is one of the best multitaskers available. It can work wonders on your hands and elbows, help to groom the cuticles, remove makeup, smoothen your skin and take care of your dry skin as well. It also contains fatty acids and antioxidants that rejuvenate your skin and help it to look younger and feel fresher.

Sun Protection
Protect your skin from sun damage at all times. The harmful rays of the sun are considered to be one of the main reasons behind wrinkles, dry skin and roughness. You should always wear a sunscreen with SPF 30 at all times and try to dress in layers to prevent perspiration and overheating. Apply an SPF 15 sunscreen on your lips as well as it can help you protect your lips from becoming chapped and dry. Wide brimmed hats and sunglasses are excellent additions to your sun protection regimes as well.

Treat Your Skin From the Inside
Treating your skin problems from the outside isn’t going to be enough. You need to make sure that you address the issues on the inside as well. Maintain a balanced diet that offers a rich source of fatty acids, magnesium, Vitamin C and beta carotene. Some of the food items that help your skin are oranges, mangoes, carrots and salmon.

Maintain Skin in Winter
If you’re suffering from dry skin, it might end up taking a beating during those winter months. The biggest problem with winters is the low moisture content that seems to aggravate skin problems and increase the dry skin on your body. To ensure that you remain protected during the winter make sure that you drink a lot of water and stay outdoors for as little time as possible. It also helps to wash and moisturize your skin in the mornings and then re-moisturize them at night.

Don’t apply heavy creams around your eyes. The area around your eyes is known to be extremely sensitive and applying heavy cream will cause your skin to puff up. This can ultimately lead to sagging skin. Make sure that you use gels or formulated eye creams only.

Following these simple tips on a regular basis can help you get rid of your dry skin issues once and for all. No skin care routine can be successful without some amounts of self constraint and discipline. So even though it might seem to be a pain, you need to ensure that you follow these practices day in and day out to maintain younger looking and healthy skin.
